Who gives away 1.5 Billion a year? I am sure you have heard that Warren Buffett, known to some, as the “Oracle of Omaha”, recently announced that he is giving away 85% of his wealth over the next few years.
As many of you get to know me, you will find out how much I really like Warren Buffett. Ever since I was kid, I have been reading about him (Many of my investing strategies today are influenced by him). However, when I heard the news that he was giving so much money away, I wondered why?
Why wouldn’t he give that money to his family? Why wouldn’t he keep it in the company so it would continue to benefit shareholders like me? So many questions popped into my head. The newspapers, radio stations, and TV networks printed and aired the story very quickly.

When the 2nd wealthiest man in the world states he is going to be giving 1.5 BILLION dollars away each year to the 1st wealthiest man in world’s charitable foundation, everybody is going to hear about it.
Whether or not you agree with what Warren Buffett is going to do, the event created a huge commotion. My point in telling you this story, is that sometimes it pays to do a really outrageous stunt, promotion or event to get everyone talking about you.
So many floor coverings dealers would benefit by putting themselves out there a bit.
Most people are tired of the weekend blowout sale, with the add full of colorful pictures at discounted prices.
*Try something new, something bold.
*Be different.
*Creating a buzz about your store with a crazy stunt or wild publicity stunt will drive free media your way.
Now I am not saying that you break the law. I am not saying you do something so wild that it will hurt your public image.
But whatever you do, some people will approve and others won’t. Successful people learn to ignore criticism.
Be creative.
Write a book and publish it.
Hire a celebrity to come into your store.
Give away money.
Put a blog on your website.
You can start to personally promote yourself as an industry expert.
Host a sleepover if you sell mattresses.
Do something to create a stir. Do something a little outrageous and bold so people will start to talk.
Have fun with it in your marketing. Tell your customer YOUR story….let them get to know you! This will differentiate yourself from all you competitors. People want to do business with someone they know and trust. You can do this in your marketing coming directly from YOU!
